DAVAO

Sprawling at the foot of Mt. Apo, Davao( dah-bow, and sometimes spelt 'Dabaw' ) is the fastest-growing city in Mindanao. While predominantly Christian it has an interesting ad eclectic mix of Muslim, Chinese and tribal influences. The tribal cultures are showcased during the second week of August each year,During the Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival, with costumes street parades, dances and performances, along with fantastic display of fruits and flowers.

Davao also has a long-standing Japanese history, which i associated with early abaca-processing warehouses in the area an, less happily, with WWII, when the thriving Japanese community dispersed. There are still strong ties between the mother country and 'little Japan' , as Davao is also known.

Outside the city, export quantities of pineapples, bananas and citrus are produced, and plantations can be visited. For the natural history enthusiast , there are walking tracks around nearby Mt. Apo and there's a breeding programme for the endangered Philippine eagle at nearby Eagle Conservation Center.

The nearby islands of Samal and  Talikud offer clear water, good corals and wreck-diving.
